Application Status

Applying for 2009
The Rutgers-Newark Master of Fine Arts Program will begin accepting applications for Fall 2009 in November 2008 (please see How To Apply). Applicants who wish specific information about applying should contact the R-N MFA Program Coordinator at rnmfa@newark.rutgers.edu.

Our location, faculty and program design are excellent, but we are very
affordable. Tuition for NJ residents is $5,742 a semester; out-of-state tuition is $8,536. A limited number of room reservations at University Square, our new campus residence, will be offered to those who are accepted.

Application to the program may be completed online. Online application is strongly encouraged, however paper applications are also available.

Please apply in one genre only: Fiction, Poetry, or Nonfiction. We do not currently offer workshops for writers of Romance, Fantasy, Young Adult or Science Fiction, but we welcome applications from writers in these genres who wish to transition into writing literary work.

GRE scores are strongly encouraged. If you are applying for financial aid that may include a teaching assistantship, GRE scores are required.

A complete application consists of:

• Graduate College Application
• GRE test scores
• Application fee, $60 made out to Rutgers University
• Portfolio (3 copies) consisting of:
   Poetry: 15 pages
   Fiction: 30 pages (novel excerpt or 3 short stories)
   Nonfiction: 30 pages (personal essays, memoir, or book excerpt)
• Official Transcript
• Personal Statement (3 copies)
• 3 Letters of Recommendation
• Resume (3 copies)

If you want your application manuscript returned, please enclose an SASE.

You may send copies of published work, but we would like to see new work as well. We encourage you to apply by as early in our application process so that the faculty can spend more time to consider your application.

Our deadline for financial aid is January 15, 2008. If you are applying for financial aid and/or a teaching position, please state this clearly on your application. Those who apply for teaching positions must submit GRE scores.

The Rutgers-Newark MFA Program currently offers the following financial
aid, awarded on a competitive basis.

• Teaching Assistantships:$21,400, plus health benefits & tuition remission


• Half-Tuition Scholarships: credit up to 6 hours

• Teaching Fellowships: $3600 (one course per semester) or $7200 (one course both semesters)

The strength and range of the application manuscript, as well as information provided by resumes, personal statements, letters of recommendation and other admissions materials. will be carefully reviewed. Teaching experience is highly regarded in those applicants applying for TA’s or Teaching Fellowships.
